Mr. Portner is the Managing Partner of Portner & Shure, P.A. and is licensed to practice law in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. He represents clients in matters of criminal defense, personal injury, including motor vehicle accidents, medical malpractice, workers' compensation, and drug and medical device injuries. Mr. Portner supervises Portner & Shure’s seven fully staffed offices, a staff of fifty and five lawyers. Every week he is involved in helping to recover over $500,000 in settlements and trial awards against the major insurance companies and oversees a law firm that has now recovered over $400 million dollars. Further, Mr. Portner is routinely in court or advising in serious criminal matters throughout Maryland, Virginia, and D.C.
After graduating cum laude from the University of Baltimore Law School and serving as an associate editor of the Law Review, Mr. Portner clerked for Chief Judge Gilbert of the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. Thereafter, Mr. Portner served as a litigator at Gordon, Feinblatt. There, he obtained countless large settlements, binding arbitration, and trial awards. As a result, the head of the personal injury department selected Mr. Portner to work with co-counsel, Levin, Papantonio (one of the country’s top personal injury firms) in a sick building case in the District of Columbia. The case resulted in a multi-million-dollar verdict. Soon thereafter, Mr. Portner left to start Portner & Shure.
Mr. Portner’s philosophy with insurance companies is to be aggressive, but fair. Above all else, he stresses the importance of client satisfaction. Mr. Portner dedicates considerable time to all of his endeavors but believes each personal injury or criminal case should be treated as if it's the only case of the firm. He has obtained over $400 million in recoveries because of his attention to detail, willingness to litigate, and insistence that his staff has constant communication with each client.
During the Covid-19 slow down he continued to battle with the insurance companies and obtained a $2.15 million dollar settlement in a Northern Virginia wrongful death pedestrian accident case, a $900,000 settlement in a Newport News, Virginia car accident involving a minor, a $750,000 settlement in a Hagerstown, Maryland wrongful death auto accident case, as well as a $450,000 settlement in a Bel Air, Maryland serious car accident case.
In addition to recovering over three hundred million dollars for our clients, Mr. Portner has tried or resolved hundreds of cases against some of the top insurance defense attorneys and prosecutors in both State and Federal Court. Portner & Shure, P.A. is not just a personal injury firm that settles cases. Portner & Shure, because of this aggressive policy, litigates automobile accidents, workers’ compensation, medical malpractice, and criminal defense cases almost daily. Insurance companies and prosecutors are well aware of the firms that don't back down. Mr. Portner, and the team he has hand-picked to work with, are fully prepared to go toe to toe with big insurance companies and prosecutors and have a track record of excellent results.
