If you were in a car accident in Maryland, you'll likely need a copy of the police report, whether it's for your insurance claim, your own records, or a legal claim you're pursuing. Here's where to get it, based on where the accident happened.
Contact the Baltimore Police Department's Central Records Division directly instead of Maryland State Police.
Requests go through the Baltimore County Police Department by mail, using their Police Report Request Form.
If your accident happened on a Maryland Transportation Authority road, request the report from MDTA Police's Central Records Unit by mail, including a self-addressed stamped envelope. Requests shouldn't be submitted until at least 7 days after the accident.
Not sure which agency handled your accident? Call ahead to confirm before you submit anything. Every jurisdiction handles reports and fees a little differently, and calling first can save you a wasted trip or a wasted mailing.
How long does it take to get the report?
It varies by jurisdiction. Some are ready within about a week; others take several weeks.
Can someone else request the report on my behalf?
Generally, yes, if you're an involved party or your legal representative is the one requesting it. Check the specific agency's request form for exact requirements though, since they vary.
What if I can't find my crash report number?
You can still request the report using the date, time, and location of the accident. The report number just speeds things up if you have it.
