After a car accident, most people are very shaken up and they are not thinking straight. Sometimes you are seriously injured and are rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. In the most serious accidents, police will respond to the scene and draft an official report about the accident, including information about all parties involved and their insurance policy information. However, police do not respond to the scene of every accident. In these situations, it is imperative that you collect a few pieces of information to help your claim go through the process as smooth as possible.

    • The other driver's name, address, and phone number. Try to take a picture of their driver's license. If you do not feel comfortable doing that, make sure to clearly write down all the information. You also can call the police to respond to the scene to assist with the exchange of information.
    • The other vehicle's license plate number. This can be used to run a tag trace in the event you cannot obtain information on the other party's driver's license/
    • the other driver's insurance company name
    • The other driver's policy number for insurance

The above information is crucial in making sure that your accident case is resolved in a timely manner. If any of the above information is missing, it can delay the claims process significantly.

If you've been injured in an auto accident in Virginia, always remember to exchange all information with the other driver, and call Portner & Shure for a free consultation: (410) 995-1515.
