Self-Driving Cars Coming to Northern Virginia Within a Year

Parts of the most congested areas of highways in Northern Virginia are getting automated vehicles. Testing will be conducted on Interstates 95, 495, 66, and the U.S. routes 29 and 50. Earlier this week we reported on the problems that self-driving cars pose for car manufacturers and drivers on the road.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles in conjunction with other departments and agencies in the state have put this plan for self-driving cars together in order to try and limit the issue of traffic congestion in these areas. Transurban, the operator of Virginia’s toll roads, will make toll lanes available on I-95 and I-495 for testing of these vehicles. These cars will be required to have a “driver” in case of any problems that could arise. Northern Virginia drivers can expect to see these automated cars on the highways within a year.
