Early on Saturday morning, asingle car accidentoccurred on the Richmond Highway at Fairhaven Avenue. In addition to the driver, there was one other passenger in the vehicle. The driver suffered serious injuries, but has now been upgraded to stable condition in the hospital. However, the passenger, a 40 year old man from the Alexandria area did not survive. The man was not wearing his seatbelt and police believe that contributed to his death. The driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

After investigating the scene and reconstructing the crash, police officers believe the vehicle started to drift off the right side of the road when the car then went up on the curb, hit a fire hydrant, and then smashed into a telephone pole.Police do not think that the vehicle was speeding at the time of the crash, but have not yet ruled out alcohol as a factor.

Seatbelts are one of the most important safety devices available in vehicles, and all fifty states have laws in place that require them to be worn at all times while in the car. Many accident deaths and serious injuries could have easily been avoided if a seatbelt was being used.We will not know for sure if the passenger in this accident would have survived the crash if he was wearing his seatbelt, but that likely could have been the case.
