Virginia Medical Malpractice Attorney | Making the Tough DecisionsAuthor: Portner & Shure
A recent study has appeared in the latest issue of JAMA Internal Medicine reporting that half of the patients 65 and older who require medical care need the help of family to make medical decisions for them. This issue is a symptom of how progressive our medical care has grown. Doctors now have the ability to keep patients alive, even when they are too sick to communicate their wishes. Because family members are becoming more and more involved with the medical care of their relatives, hospitals should be making an effort to help families feel more at ease making these decisions as well as keeping the family updated more frequently. It is also a wakeup call for the rest of us to make living wills in case the unspeakable happens.
