Prince William County

Prince William County was created by the General Assembly of the colony of Virginia in 1731.  The County was named for Prince William, a son of King George II.  It was the site of two of the most famous American Civil War battles. Manassas National Battlefield Park located north of the Independent City of Manassas, preserves the sites of the first and second battles of Bull Run

Prince William CountyUp until World War II, Prince William County was mainly rural, however the post War growth caused the County to begin to transition into a bedroom community to Washington, D.C.  Growth in the Manassas area became so great that it was designated as an independent city of Virginia in 1975.  By 2009, Prince William County was estimated to have a population of almost 395,000 people.  This amounts to over a %40 increase in just under ten years.  This population growth has led to Prince William County becoming a dramatically diverse racial and cultural area that extends over 348 square miles.

In addition to the independent cities of Manassas and Manassas Park and the incorporated towns of Dumfries, Haymarket, Occoquan, and Quantico, the County contains numerous unincorporated communities which include, Bristow, Dale City, Gainesville, Triangle, and Woodbridge.  Despite having independent communities, the County has combined its criminal, traffic, civil, and juvenile and domestic relations courts in the Courthouse Complex located in the City of Manassas.  The County Government Complex, however, is located in the community of Woodbridge.

The Prince William civil court system is separated into two divisions; General District and Circuit Courts. The General District Court can consider cases up to $15,000.  These cases are decided by a judge and can be completed in less than four months from the initial filing date.  In larger cases, the Circuit Court is the proper venue.  These cases take up to one year to complete and are generally heard before a jury.  Because of the diverse jury pools, the juries are not considered to be quite as conservative in personal injury cases as some of the County’s neighbors.  This generalization is not always accurate, however, and is dependent on the type and severity of the accident and the resulting injuries.  While juries can be conservative when it comes to smaller accidents with only physical therapy or chiropractic care they can also be extremely generous in cases where there has been a significant accident and an objective injury.

Our office tries cases in both the Prince William County General District and Circuit Courts on a regular basis. We are familiar with the defense attorneys that work for the insurance companies, as well as the tendencies of the judges.  Before we file a case, we do an analysis as to what is the best court to file in for each individual case.  If you were involved in an accident, you should obtain legal representation.  If you, or your family/friends have been a victim in a car accident, motorcycle accident, truck accident, work related injury, dog bite, slip and fall or any other personal injury, our attorneys can help you.
