Prince George’s County
Prince George'sPrince George’s is just one of 48 counties in the country to receive an AAA bond rating from Standard and Poor’s, and according to the 2008 U.S. Census Bureau, was the wealthiest county in America where a majority of its citizens were African Americans.  Among the many notable individuals who have at one point lived in Prince George’s County are Sugar Ray Leonard, Kathie Lee Gifford, Martin Lawrence and Jim Henson.
The Circuit Court and county seat of Prince George’s County are located in Upper Marlboro, MD.  Despite being the county seat of the county with the second highest population in Maryland, Upper Marlboro is a small town, with just 657 residents.  Population centers are spread across the county, in cities and towns including Beltsville, Bowie, Capital Heights, College Park (home of the University of Maryland), Greenbelt, Hyattsville, Landover, Largo, Laurel, New Carrollton, Oxon Hill, Suitland and Temple Hills.
Prince George’s County has long been considered to be among the most friendly counties in Maryland to injury victims.  According to Westlaw, Prince George’s County juries have awarded thirty-six (36) verdicts that have exceeded $100,000 since January 1, 2008.  Baltimore City is the only jurisdiction in the state that can claim to have awarded more verdicts over $100,000 during that time frame.

Earlier this year, a Prince George’s County jury awarded a substantial verdict for injuries sustained in a truck accident in Diaz v. Earth Hauler Trucking.  In Diaz, a family was traveling in a minivan on I-495 behind a dump truck owned by Earth Hauler Trucking.  The rear gate of the dump truck suddenly detached from the truck, causing the gate and debris held within to fall onto I-495.  Although there was no actual contact between the minivan and the dump truck, the detached gate and debris struck the minivan, causing two (2) of its tires to go flat.  During impact, the Plaintiff struck his head on the roof of the vehicle and his knee on the dashboard.  As an example of how favorable Prince George’s County juries can be, the jury returned a verdict of $105,755, despite the fact that the Plaintiff was able to replace his tires and complete his drive, and that the Plaintiff waited for over a month until seeking medical treatment for his injuries.
The Circuit Court of Prince George’s County is also noted as a favorable court to Plaintiffs because of the speed in which cases are able to reach trial.  As a requirement under the differentiated case management system in place in Prince George’s County, all cases placed on tracks 1 through 4 must be tried within 18 months of filing.  Because the Court has separated personal injury cases from the rest of the civil non-domestic docket, most cases will be tried well before the 18 month deadline.  The use of Alternative Dispute Resolution is not required in most Circuit Court cases, but is encouraged by the Court.  Unlike most Courts, the Circuit Court of Prince George’s County has several retired judges available upon request if the use of mediation is desired.  Requests for mediation are permitted to be made over the phone, rather than through a written motion.
