Anne Arundel County
Anne Arundel CountyThe Circuit Court of Anne Arundel County is located in Annapolis, MD.  Annapolis is not only the state’s capital, but was also the nation’s capital for a brief period after the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783.  Today, Annapolis is known for being the home of the United States Naval Academy.
While Annapolis is certainly a tourist attraction and a city steeped in history, it currently boasts a population of just 36,408 inhabitants.  That number is a small percentage of the half million people that populate Anne Arundel County.  Cities including Arnold, Crofton, Crownsville, Fort Meade, Jessup, Linthicum, Odenton, Parole, Pasadena, Severn and Severna Park, have recently emerged as population centers within county borders.  Anne Arundel County has continually rated among the fastest growing counties in the state of Maryland.  The trend toward growth has only increased in recent years with the construction of Arundel Mills Mall and the expansion of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.  Of course, with an increase in growth and traffic comes an increase in car accidents, and the attorneys at Portner & Shure are well equipped to handle the needs of auto accident victims in the Anne Arundel County area.
Anne Arundel County’s track record for Plaintiff’s jury verdicts can be classified as solid, but not spectacular.  According to Westlaw, a total of nine (9) jury verdicts have eclipsed the $100,000 barrier since January 1, 2008.  While that number may seem small compared to the 36 verdicts exceeding $100,000 in Prince George’s County and 45 verdicts exceeding $100,000 in Baltimore City over the same time frame, it is still greater than the six (6) verdicts over $100,000 in Baltimore County, which has approximately 280,000 more inhabitants than Anne Arundel County.

The largest verdict in Anne Arundel County since the beginning of 2008 was rendered in Howard v. Shulman.  In Howard, a man named Robert Howard was struck by a cement truck while standing in the shoulder lane outside of his car on Route 295.  The jury found that Shulman, the driver of the cement truck, was negligent and rendered a verdict of $1,953,776.74, with approximately $1.85 million awarded in non-economic damages.  The Court later reduced the award in this case to $740,776.72 in compliance with Maryland’s statutory cap on non-economic damages.
The most noteworthy aspect of the Anne Arundel County court system is the persistence in which the Court prods the parties to reach a settlement.  Typically, an Anne Arundel County judge will begin encouraging the parties to settle as early as the scheduling conference.  Court ordered mediation with the aim of achieving consensus on settlement is also not uncommon as a case proceeds toward trial.  If a settlement can’t be reached, the parties will proceed through the pre-trial stage to trial, and eventually a verdict will be rendered.
